The aim of the course is to provide knowledge on the analysis and evaluation of the road transportation systems in terms of safety. Topics cover identification of the road safety problem through statistics, national and European policy on road safety, procedures and stakeholders involved, advanced technologies implemented, road safety studies and databases developed, risk analysis methods, treatments for improving road infrastructure, and impact assessment.
Students will be familiarized with road safety, affecting parameters, national and European policies. Upon completion of the course, they will be able to: – Analyze safety on rural roads and intersections, as affected by the geometric and operational characteristics and traffic volumes. – Analyze safety on urban and interurban roads and intersections, as affected by the geometric and operational characteristics and traffic volumes. – Combine the above through the empirical BAYES method and estimate corridor and network road safety level. – Select interventions and estimate crash modification. – Implement POISSON, HAUER, BAYES, X2 methods to assess the interventions’ impact.
