Eftihia Nathanail

Director

Eftihia G. Nathanail is Professor in the field of “Design and Evaluation of Passenger and Freight Transportation Systems”, Chair of the Department of Civil Engineering, Director of the Laboratory of Traffic, Transportation and Logistics Management (TTLog), Director of the Interdepartmental Postgraduate Program “Project Management, Transportation and Spatial Planning,” and Deputy Director of the postgraduate program “Prevention, Management and Restoration of Natural Disaster and Climate Change Impacts on the Built Environment.”

She has served as Dean of the Polytechnic School of the University of Thessaly and Vice-Chair of the Department of Civil Engineering.

She is an civil expert on Dangerous Goods in NATO’s Land Transport Group, a member of the Transportation Safety Management Systems Committee (ACS10) of the Transportation Research Board (TRB), and a member of the Hazardous Materials Transportation Committee (AT040) of the TRB. She is also a member of the Sustainable Mobility Committee of the Directorate of Sustainable Mobility of the Municipality of Volos, representing the University of Thessaly, and Chair of the Organizing and Scientific Committee of the International Conference on Sustainable Urban Mobility (CSUM).

She served as a member of the TRB Hazardous Materials Transportation Committee (AT040) from 2009 to 2021 and as national representative for the European COST Actions TU1004 (Modelling Public Transport Passenger Flows in the Era of Intelligent Transport Systems) and TU1305 (Social Networks and Travel Behaviour, European Cooperation in Science and Technology).

She is a member of evaluation panels for national and European research proposals and advisory boards of institutions. She has served on expert advisory boards for RESTRAIL, ECOMOBILITY, ECOCITY, and MIND-SETS, and was national representative for the Support Framework Business Program 2000–2006 and Foresight Technology, Greece, European Thematic Network ROSEBUD.

Her recent research includes:

  • Transition to green freight transport and last-mile delivery (Couriers Go Green)
  • Participatory processes in transport system planning (DEMo4PPL)
  • Development of a Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (Municipality of Alexandroupolis) and traffic calming solutions (Volos)
  • Development of a sustainable urban development training program (INVEST)
  • Impact assessment methodologies for smart transport solutions (NOVELOG, CERBERUS)
  • Passenger and freight interconnection systems for short- and long-distance transport (CLOSER*)
  • Analysis of cooperative schemes and shared information systems in urban and interurban networks (STRAIGHTSOL*)
  • Evaluation of urban public transport terminals for users and society (CITY-HUB)
  • Coordination of the development and implementation of an integrated educational program on sustainable intermodal hubs (ALLIANCE)

She has conducted extensive research on behavioral modeling and road safety and has coordinated one national and five local road safety campaigns (CAST).

Her published work includes more than 100 scientific journal papers and approximately twice as many conference proceedings papers.

She is editor of the special issues “Transportation System Design” (Safety, MDPI) and “Towards Sustainability: Transportation System Evaluation and Optimization” (Sustainability, MDPI), as well as five additional volumes published by Springer, De Gruyter, and Elsevier. She serves on the Editorial Board of TTJ (De Gruyter) and has authored chapters in 10 books.
